Visiting Family in Washington June 28 to July 5

On Tuesday June 28 we flew from Charlotte to Seattle and then drove to Bellingham to visit Sarah and Joe.  Here we are ready to kayak on Friday night....more on this later.

Good flights and beautiful weather upon arrival.  We could see snow capped mountains as we drove north to Bellingham, always a welcome and beautiful sight.

On Wed, Thurs and Friday we helped Sarah and Joe with yard work and painting and had a great time doing it.  Jordan says it is just practice for when we get to his house.

We enjoyed some great home cooked meals with Sarah and Joe. Julie's view of the work team from the kitchen where she is preparing delicious food.  The gardeners.
The roofer.

It is so nice to visit our children and we really enjoyed the projects and home cooking in their wonderful home. And I really liked their closet...yes that is a four keg tap in the closet.

We also visited Sarah's new office for the Sarah Postma Photography business downtown Bellingham    http://www.sarahpostma.com/

Friday night we went kayaking from 9pm - midnight doing what is known as the bioluminescence tour.

The water is quite cold so they suit you up with water proof jackets and the kayaks have a spray skirt.  As usual, the equipment is not really designed for a 6'4" frame and it was a bit difficult to enter and exit and the leg room was actually insufficient to be able to fully extend my legs.  But only a couple hours in the kayak so all worked out OK. We paddled the two person kayaks almost 4 miles round trip to a small cove off Bellingham Bay.  It was very dark there and when you agitated the water with your paddle the water lit up from the plankton reacting to the turbulence.  Really cool experience and a perfect night without any wind and about 60 degrees.  It does not get any better in Bellingham for night kayaking!  A great experience.  Sorry, no pictures.
Saturday we toured the Bellingham museum which had a wonderful photography display of the logging era as well as mid 20th century shots.  Very well done and in the 1892 City Hall building which has been preserved.

Here we are at the old Bellingham grainery building that is the local place for couple's photos.

We also attended the farmer's market which is really well done.  It is always nice to have all the fresh veggies and fruits.
Sunday we had a great breakfast and then drove to Denise and Dave's place in Lakebay, WA near Gig Harbor.  Here we are just before leaving.

They have a wonderful home on the bay and a cute guest cottage we stayed in for two nights. Here is a shot of the cottage.

They host a 4th of July party each year and we were invited along with Sarah and Joe.  What a great time.  On the 4th we attended the community parade.  Here we are all ready to go.

Well I guess I should say we participated in the parade as we walked the parade route dressed in our red white and blue and tossed candy to the crowds.

Well perhaps "crowds" is overstating it a bit but all the neighbors along the bay line the parade route.  There are classic cars, decorated lawn tractors, home built floats, bicycles and walkers (like us).  Really a great tradition capped off with a community pancake breakfast.  What a cool little community with so many friendly neighbors.
The afternoon of the 4th brought out the annual volley ball on the beach...well at least the low tide beach....the games promptly ended as the court was reclaimed by the 17 foot tide.

Yes, a 17 foot tide from negative 3' to positive 14' was recorded on the 4th of July.  I don't think Julie of I had played volley ball in 15 years but what a great time was had by all.  The dinner included local clams dug by Julie's cousin Brent, crab legs, Copper River salmon, sweet corn and so many other wonderful items.  Here is a shot of the group after dinner.  Julie's uncle Glen and aunt Jewell, their children and grandchildren and some of our family after dinner.

Julie's aunt, uncle and Sarah and Joe.
Some games after dinner while waiting for the fireworks.
The golf balls are picked up at a future low tide.

A nice campfire later in the evening.

The fireworks.

Tuesday Dave and Denise prepared an awesome breakfast and we said goodbye to them and to Sarah and Joe.  And we all wished Sarah and Joe a happy 13th wedding anniversary!
Watch out Denise and Dave, our boat may show up in your bay in a couple years!  The boating here would be really good!
We then went to visit Julie's uncle Glen and aunt Jewell.  We got a tour of their property on  Glen's new ATV.  A nice secluded property near Gig Harbor, what a great spot.

We then toured Tacoma a bit and then returned the rental car and camped out at the airport Courtyard by Marriott to get ready for our early 5:25 AM flight to Denver to visit Brett.
The mountains and family tour continues soon.....
