Hilton Head Island and a Road Trip. October 17 to 29

A nice sunset from the Windmill Harbor Marina in Hilton Head.

After getting organized a bit we decided to take a road trip which encompassed 4 days (10-13th) and many Looper friends.  A great trip!  Our first stop was in Myrtle Beach

where we visited Ken and Lois (Camelot).  We met them on the river system in the Fall of 2015 and other various spots through 2016.  We had a delightful dinner at Chuck's Steak House and then toured their wonderful condo in North Myrtle Beach.  They have sold Camelot and are enjoying golfing, etc in SC.  It was great to see you Lois and Ken!
Next stop was St James Plantation near Southport, NC.  We stayed at Jim and Kathy's (JimKat) beautiful recently purchased home.  We toured the area, had a great lunch on Oak Island, took a nice bicycle ride around the neighborhood, grilled some wonderful steaks and played a little euchre before having a great roaring outdoor fireplace fire.  Thanks so much for the hospitality Jim and Kathy!  We hope to see you on the water once you decide to exit the Tennessee River area!
Next stop was New Bern, NC.  We took a wonderful walk around the community before we had a great dinner at the Bay Leaf with four other Looper couples.  Ralph and Linda (Mazel Tug), Gwen and Chris (Davali), Pat and Dick (Dream Catcher) and Paula and Jim (Palmetto Paradise) were all in attendance. It was a great reunion of our joining this group at Joliet, IL in Sept 2015 which at that time was only our fourth travel day or so on our adventure.

We were only missing two other boats from our gang there 2 years ago.  It was so nice visiting with everyone and then going to Pat and Dick's temporary condo for a quick dessert. We wish the entire group good health and safe travels. It was so great catching up with you all!
It was nice to get back aboard.  One thing about staying at a yacht club facility is you are not referred to as a transient.  We got a promotion and are now "visiting yachtsmen".
Another visiting yachtsmen.  Wow, what a vessel.  New Grand Banks 60.

We had some more wonderful walks around the neighborhood.  Discovered a street that Kevin B will like after spending most of his career as a millwright!

A fixer upper on the street for you Kevin!
Some Halloween decorations especially for you Joe!
Here we are after taking a walk along Coligny Beach on HHI.  Nice park area.

We had one of the heads malfunction and the technician came, ordered parts and installed them.  It works again but is sure was nice to have the second head while it did not.  Then when we were testing all systems on the 24th, we found the inverter inoperable.  Found a technician, tore things apart, called technical support and they advised with 80% confidence it needed a new control board (hundreds of dollars of course).  So it was overnighted, installed and yes you guessed it, same problem.  We disconnected boat wiring and wired in some AC load directly and it works fine.  So the problem logically lies somewhere in the boat wiring.  So we will begin a cat and mouse game to find the issue.  Well after writing this, the inverter is being shipped to a repair facility.  It acted completely different today and would not hold an inverting state even directly wired like yesterday.  So...no inverter for a while. We'll have it shipped to Jacksonville and hopefully pick it up and have it installed there. It's only a boat and it can be repaired.  We are thankful for our health.
Also spent a good deal of time getting all our insurances changed due to our changes in status, retired again, live aboard again and Florida (not Michigan) residents again.  Health, liability, umbrella, and oh yes, the deer damage claim, all took a great deal of time to chase down.  Still working on excess umbrella at this writing.....
Here we are entering the lock to dinghy to the grocery store.

Well, at least till we figured out is was a 3+ mile no wake zone to get there, a mile walk each way to the store....so, we just did not have that much time before dark.  So grocery run will be later somewhere in Georgia.
This afternoon as we just finished lunch we had a knock on the boat.  Wow!  Another small world story...Denise and Mark (Island Office) were on the dock!  We first met them two years ago on the river system heading south.  They are returning from a summer in Maine, headed for their home in Florida for a while and are stopping for one night here at Windmill Harbor.  We had a nice visit aboard before they went next door to inspect the new Sabre 45 being prepped by the dealer here.  Here they are on their next boat...well dreaming anyway!

Looking forward to getting on the move again on Monday October 30.   It is supposed to be 42 degrees here tomorrow morning, time to move south! That will be four months almost to the day that Sum Escape was slipped in Hilton Head and has not left the slip since!  Almost like winter storage in Michigan...feeling a little rusty on electronics and general boat operations.
We will anchor out one night on the way to Brunswick and then stay at the Brunswick Landing Marina and hope to visit our long time Hudsonville neighbors Becky and John who reside nearby on St Simons Island.
More soon....

Great to be Back Aboard. October11-16, 2017

First, we need to thank all our family and friends for making time to see us during our 3 months  in Michigan.  And a special thanks to all SpartanNash associates and Board members for welcoming Tom back and making our stay in Michigan memorable.   Sorry we did not get to see all of you...we were both really busy and could not find time for all.
We had some real memorable experiences in our trip "home" to Michigan.  It started with picking up a rental car with Michigan plates in SC!  Then when Tom got to work and was reviewing orientation materials it was noted that the three "example" schedules for flex time were Julie, Tom and Sarah! This trip back to Michigan was meant to be!
Work was like I never left it in certain ways.  But in others, a completely new experiences.  It was an honor to be able to support the solid team at SpartanNash for a short period of time again.  I wish everyone the best!
And Julie stepped right back into spin and yoga classes with her old friends too!
Family wise it was wonderful to be "home".
A quick stop at North Shore Marina.

We celebrated mom's 94th birthday at a cottage we rented on the Muskegon Lake channel,

enjoyed "Supper Club" with our friends on the deck at the cottage.

We were so happy to have all of our children present for the wedding of our son Jordan and new daughter in law Eliza.  Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Van Hall!!

We saw all our siblings, here we are with Julie's siblings at a new restaurant on the NW side of GR.

Julie organized photos and memorabilia from our storage locker, and sent boxes to each of our kids
One altercation with a deer running into the side of Julie's first rental car,

We generally enjoyed living downtown GR again and especially the wonderful summer weather in Michigan from early July till early October.

We even participated in the 7th annual bridge walk over the bridges of Grand Rapids on Labor Day.  A great walk!  And of course the 9th annual ArtPrize was happening downtown as well.  One of the artist venues in front of a rising full moon.

And we biked around Muskegon on a nice September day with friends
A great place to be for a short vacation from cruising.  The view from our condo balcony.

River House condo on the left.  Our home for three months.

It was great to walk along the river almost every day.  Here we are on the last weekend in town in front of the condo building.

It was so great to see family, friends and former work associates.  Several Sundays were spent with Mom.

But we did retire for a reason as well....
Tom's last day at SpartanNash was Friday Oct 6.  So after repacking things to go back into our 5'x10' storage closet,

and packing the SUV for the return trip, we hit the road for Hilton Head on Tuesday the 10th .  It was a nice two day trip back and our boat neighbors welcomed us back.  Well at least their boat did!

The only Irma damage was a broken vent cover where a spring line "caught" the edge and snapped it off as the boat was moving around in the wind and high water.  A new vent cover is on order and it is just a cosmetic fix.   The contracted help did a great job in maintaining the boat systems and the bright work refinishing was phenomenal.  Check out the quality of this varnish on the bright work!  I think I will be hanging up my brush, I can't compete with this!

When we arrived on Wednesday afternoon our friends Carole and DeVere (Job Site) were already in the marina and invited us over for a cocktail to welcome us home.  And on Thursday we had dinner with them and Teri and Mike who live in the Windmill Harbor community. A "thank you" shout out to Teri and Mike who watched over our boat while we were gone.  This even included a text that Irma was on the way and our boat needed attention.  We had already contracted with Captain Mike to prepare her for Irma and they were happy to hear that.  It was a busy hurricane season thus far!

The dinner was at a small out of the way restaurant, Hogs Head.  Very good!
Friday we picked up Carole and DeVere and dined at the famous Hudson's. Great seafood and a good little band on the deck/pier. Carole was watching closely as the sign below said to do...Molly would not fare well against these.

We bid them farewell and safe travels as they left on Saturday morning for Michigan until early December.  We hope to rendezvous with them in early December to cross the Okeechobee as we both have reservations on Florida's west coast for a period of time.  We of course will all rendezvous with Brigitte and Scott (Putz'n Around) to plan another Bahamas cruise! Looking forward to our Bahamas group reunion too.

Sunday we launched the dinghy and took a 20 mile round trip ride to Daufeskie Island (SW of Hilton Head Island), rented a golf cart and rode around the island.
Lots of historic sites and craft shops and watering holes (so we mostly rode the golf cart). It was also interesting that a huge development went south and only a few of the nice cottage style homes are occupied.  A huge clubhouse, abandoned golf course, etc.  Too bad, it looked like a great development site. Abandoned club house.
And entrance gate.

We are heading on a car trip to NC for a few days to visit Looper friends in a couple cities.  More later, thanks for following our blog.
