Making Memories with Mom. Dec 18-30

So my sisters Deb, Betty and I arranged our schedules to be "back to back" to be able to get mom out of the cold Michigan weather and down to her Florida house for a few weeks.  My sister Deb and brother in law Don drove her down and stayed about a week, Julie and I stayed almost two weeks and my sister Betty will be here a week after us.  Thanks for all the driving Deb and Don!
Julie and I got an Enterprise car on Friday and left the boat on Sunday Dec 18 to for the three hour drive across the state to Mom's.  This is actually a drive we have done many times over the last 33 years as Julie's parents were in Sarasota and my parents in Fort Pierce/Vero Beach.  As we make the drive, we note there are still as many cattle and dairy farms as 30 years ago.  It appears farming is still going strong.
We have lots of memories of Mom's house with our kids and we had a great visit with her.  We took her to play cards three days a week.  And had to wait up for her at night because Looper midnight is way earlier than she gets home from cards!!  Two daily walks around the block were part the routine with Mom.  Julie and I took a long hour walk each morning too. Julie cooked up a storm and we all ate well.  We took Mom to get her hair done on Tuesday.  Mom directed us there by memory which was perfect. Then we went to the Citrus Grill House for the early menu which was very tasty!  Here we are before dinner.

We met a number of Mom's neighbors.  One of them worked with our friend Tim at Bissell.  Yet another small world story!  Her neighbors are all very nice and caring people.
Lots of nice lights and decorations in the neighborhood.

And some vintage lights Mom found in a closet to decorate her home!  I think I remember these from growing up in our home in Spring Lake!

Julie had to make Christmas cookies of course.

Hanging out waiting for scraps....

Cookie making memories with grandma 1993.

Christmas Eve we went to 4 o'clock Mass.  Of course we had to get there early to get a seat and we also took Mom's neighbor Erma.  The service was very nice with the children's choir and play.  After Mass we had the shrimp bisque that Julie has made many times for Christmas Eve.  It was awesome!
Christmas Day Mom awoke to some new snowflake and gingerbread house decorations that we put up over night.  She also found a stocking stuffed with some cute Christmas socks and other miscellaneous items.

And Santa left a stocking for Julie and me too.  Another  memory made....
We had a standing rib roast, mashed potatoes, veggies, a little wine, etc...all the traditional /Christmas dinner fare.  It was fabulous!  Testing to see which thermometer works...they both did!

Weather has been fantastic with mostly sunny and in the high 70's and low 80's.  We did get some inopportune showers on two of our daily walks...got completely soaked and needed a warm shower when we got back!

We saw a gentleman riding his bike each morning as we walked and immediately thought of Kevin M...because the gentleman wore a Fox News hat and Philadelphia Eagles shirt!!
Did some minor caulking repairs for Mom, replaced light bulbs, etc.

Her home is generally in good shape and everyone chips in when here to keep it that way.  Thanks to all my siblings for this.
We also spent the week watching the first 10 episodes of This Is Us, a good show about family life, loss and death. Afterwards we shared some conversations about the death of our parents... all good conversations for us to have and share.  More memories...

Oh, and breaking news!  Deb is coming back to Florida for three more weeks after Betty leaves so Mom (and Deb...) can enjoy some more of the Florida weather.  Enjoy!
We are back in Longboat Key getting ready for our friends Paula and Rich visiting on Sunday.
Happy New Year to all!!  May 2017 be a great year for all.

On to Fort Myers Beach and Sarasota. Keep the cold up north please! Dec 6-16, 2016

We planned to and stayed at the lock campground and marina due to scheduled maintenance that was to restrict lock openings from 1 to 4 PM on Monday.  So we got up on Tuesday and called the lock to be sure all maintenance was completed and the lock was in operation.  All was good so we proceeded to the lock around 7:30 AM.  Once inside the lock, the lockmaster was having a little difficulty closing the doors.  He said they just performed manatee maintenance, scrubbing the doors and adjusting the sensitivity of door closing so manatee could not be crushed by the doors.  He had to walk back and manually control the closing of the doors for us.  Once closed, it was a whopping drop to sea level!  6 inches.  No kidding, the tide was quite high so only a 6" drop.
Our intention was to go to Fort Myers Beach but given the wave forecast for the approximate 3 mile crossing of San Carlos Bay to Estero Island we decided to stay at Legacy Harbor Marina in Fort Myers instead.  Remember we are pleasure boating and don't have a rigid schedule, so we wait until it is a pleasure to travel.
Here we are on a cool windy day in Longboat Key.
Had a little rain shower in Fort Myers on the snowman though...yes it does rain in Florida.

Our friends Scott and Brigitte (Putz'n Around) called us and said they were in town running errands and we should meet them at Capone's for lunch.  A great spot and company!  It was so good to see them as our last time with them was in May in the Bahamas.   Legacy is a very nice marina with a Publix within walking distance and the downtown restaurants and shops also an easy walk.

We continue to get questions from our friends and family like what do you eat?  Well, Julie is an excellent cook.  In short, we have all the comforts of home because it is our home.  Gas grill, convection microwave, three burner stove, crock pot, pancake griddle, an electric grill, a few pots and pans, regular walks to a grocery store for fresh food and Julie's superb skills create great and varied meals every day.  We really don't go out that much unless we meet friends for lunch or dinner.  Even when underway, we are usually in calm enough waters for cooking and start the generator and prepare breakfast or lunch.  Pea soup for the rainy cool day.

Julie decorates the boat for Christmas with the same tree we used in our condo in Grand Rapids, some nice window accents and various figurines and such.  Another touch of home because it is.  She has a little box of various holiday items stashed in the lazarette and decorates for all the major holidays.  It is a nice touch for sure.
I forgot to add this to our last posting when we were in Stuart. Someone was borrowing my Mom's boat!

So on Wednesday we went to Snook Bight Marina in Fort Myers Beach to stay a day and visit more with Scott and Brigitte....and do some Bahamas planning too!.  We had a very smooth short 24 mile cruise and fueled up when we arrived as fuel was about 30 cents a gallon cheaper here than Sarasota, our next destination. This too is a nice marina with a  Publix literally in the same parking lot and the beach just across the street.  We had lunch and dinner with Brigitte and Scott and caught up on things from the last 6 months as well as some preliminary planning for the Bahamas.  We are getting excited about returning there!
Thursday the weather forecast was showing some big winds for Friday and Saturday so we decided to leave at slack tide (7:30 AM) and try to make Sarasota, Longboat Key Moorings, our planned destination and home for mid December to mid January.  We didn't really want to spend time on a face dock somewhere for a couple days as the north winds passed through.

Along the way we cancelled our reservation at the Venice marina we had originally planned to stay at for Thursday and Friday nights.  I ordered a bunch of boat spare parts and supplies on the mobile hotspot as we were underway and Julie captained for a while.  Her piloting ended up being longer than planned as I forgot to update the shipping address, Amazon had broken it into 8 separate orders and I had to edit each one with a new shipping address!  Oops.  So Julie piloted through the roughest part of our trip, across Charlotte harbor.  She is a great captain!
We saw this moving day on the way as we crossed Pine Island Sound. I think they pray for smooth crossings with this moving arrangement!

We used a number of "bigger water" spots to exercise the diesels and ran 18-20 MPH for a number of 10-30 minute intervals.  We were glad we did...by the time we got through bridges, slow no wake and manatee zones and travelled the 88 miles to Longboat Key Club Moorings Marina we arrived right at closing time (5 o'clock).

Heading across Sarasota Bay at 20 MPH trying to see crab pots and beat the marina closing time and setting sun.

We got a slip right near the pool, hot tub, ships store, restaurant etc.  Shortly after we were in bed.... a long 10 hour day.

They are very full and we were lucky that we called when we did (early October) to secure a spot.  Their monthly rate is fairly reasonable especially given the quality of the facilities.  We are checking it out for a few days before we go across the state to Vero Beach to stay with Mom for Christmas.

Saturday night we took the complimentary shuttle to St Armands Circle and had an early dinner at what once was Charlie's Crab.  They still have the great warm poppy seed rolls!  We ate early so that we could walk across the bridge to Sarasota for the annual Holiday lighted boat parade.

It was about a 6 mile round trip walk so we got to combine exercise with a great view (that pictures will just not do justice to).

Our friends Tim and Pat dropped by for a visit on Monday Dec 12.  They drove up from Bonita Beach where they are staying for a few weeks. We had lunch on board and then took the shuttle to the resort pool and beach for the afternoon and dinner at the sunset view restaurant. We had a great time catching up.  Thanks for making the drive Tim and Pat!

We did some maintenance on the boat, took nice walks and a dinghy ride around the canal surrounding the key on Tuesday through Thursday.  A view from the dinghy looking north from New Pass.

Other random shots from our dinghy ride.

And our walk to the grocery store.  Nice golf course.

And we got some fog for a couple days as the humidity went up and the cool night air moved in.

Oh, and more repairs,...I also had two old crowns removed and temporaries put in on Tuesday.  Will get the permanent ones in early January.  So we humans need repairs too!
And here are some of our neighbors....zoom in on the boat names!

Our new bag....thanks Sherry!!  Great for beach supplies.  There are numerous beach access sites for our walks and the bag is really handy!
We had a nice day at the beach club after getting our rental car and running some errands.  And a nice sunset from Barefoot's Restaurant at the resort.

After the Holidays we will welcome friends Rich and Paula from Michigan for a few days.  And we hope Dave and Lisa (Caribbean Breeze) will stop by to say hello when they are in the area too.  And we also plan to see Bill and Carol who will be in Florida as well.  We very much enjoy family and friends visiting!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!  We hope you all enjoy the season with family and friends.

Crossing the 2nd Largest US Freshwater Lake. November 27- Dec 5

We left Jacksonville as planned on Sunday Nov 27.
We made it 69 miles to just south of St Augustine staying at an anchorage behind a sandbar (at low tide) just off the ICW.  It was a nice spot with little traffic and an easy out in the morning.
On Monday we (that would be me) sort of miscalculated how many manatee zones and other no wake zones we would encounter and had a very long day....literally sun up to sun down, 95 miles to Titusville.  We pulled anchor as the sun was rising

and dropped anchor as the sun was setting,
but it sets us up for a shorter day to get to Vero Beach on Tuesday.  We went through some skinny spots,

We also kicked up the speed through Mosquito Lagoon for 8 miles or so...no not because of bugs, but because of approaching darkness!  Had we not done so, it would have been dark when we arrived at our anchorage. And the anchorage in Titusville was not at all protected from the unpredicted rather strong winds.  For a moment we thought we were back at Faro Blanco with a strong north wind!  Had some rolly and noisy sleep this night!
Tuesday we again left at first light for a 74 mile trip to Vero Beach.  We stayed at the City Marina and had some great walks to the beach, shopping district and just around the beautiful neighborhoods.

It was nice to walk this area that we have only previously driven through for some 30 years!   One night we walked to Citrus Grill House for their wonderful early dining special. It was as good as the last time we had it!  Love the food, view and service here!
Here is the site of one of our favorite former restaurants in Vero Beach. the Lobster Shanty.  We have many fond memories of going there with our parents and children.  Yet another example of the land just becoming too valuable for a restaurant and a condo developer taking over.

On Friday we left for Stuart.  Not too far out of Vero, the AIS was showing a "buddy"...yes it was our friends Carole and DeVere on Job Site a few miles behind us!

We had planned to meet them in Stuart and they travel a lot faster than we do so had caught up to us.  We have not seen them since May in Fernandina Beach so it was great to catch up and have dinner with them.  And we made preliminary plans to meet up in late January to cross to the Bahamas with them and Brigitte and Scott on Putz'n Around....the same group we went there with last year.  We are really looking forward to it! A photo of the Sailors Return Restaurant at the Sunset Bay Marina in Stuart.
Sunday we departed early to start across the Okeechobee Waterway.

In the first lock we were joined by one larger boat and one of the crew members said he was from Holland MI....small world again.

We travelled a nice serene river until a group of five fast boats started catching up.
About to be rocked!

One after another called us to slow pass, but the fourth one just cruised past us within a mile of the next lock not really worrying about his wake.  Sort of made me mad so I throttled up that last mile and stayed with him and ahead of the fifth boat.  Lucky we did that as they only let six boats in the lock and we were queued up as the sixth.  So that last boat had to catch up to their friends out in Lake Okeechobee. Here is a photo of the second largest natural freshwater lake completely in the United States, Lake Okeechobee. Of course Lake Michigan is first!

We went 58 miles to Roland and Mary Ann Martin's Marina in Clewiston.  Coming through the open Clewiston lock....not very wide, a bass boat backed up on the other end to let us pass.

We got tied up just before scores of bass boats descended on the facility for a weigh in for the bass fishing tourney taking place.  It was interesting to be in the middle of the action and wow, some of those bass were huge!

Having a refreshment at the "world famous" tiki bar.

We talked to a couple in the ship store who saw that we got off our trawler and struck up a conversation.  It turns out they rented a trawler in Maine last summer and so we heard a bit about how great the trip was.  They were there by RV and are thinking about a trawler so they were interested to hear our answers to many live aboard questions too.  A Maine trip this summer is looking more promising the more we hear about and research it.  The common statement from those that have done it is "just do it, you are so close once in NY and you will not regret it....it is beautiful".  So....research and planning continues.
On Monday we departed real early and made the 55 easy miles to the WP Franklin Lock Campground and Marina.

We planned to stay here as the lock was undergoing maintenance and was not going to reopen until 4 PM.  Our slip is $30 a night including electricity.  The facilities are very neat and clean and the volunteers who checked us in were very friendly.  There are only 8 slips and 4 can be reserved.  They say only up to 40 feet but it is not problem for the wider beam and length if you reserve slip 1 or 8 as they are "end ties".  You just have to "fool" the on line system and tell it you are 40 feet. The docks are brand new and solid with 30 and 50 amp power.

We took a walk around a neighborhood near the campground and checked things out.  No stores or such 5 miles either way according to the park personnel.  But a nice quiet spot.  All the RV spots were taken but we were the only boat there except one that broke down and came in.  With a national park membership, those 62 and over are only charged $15 (boats and campers) so it is no wonder the park is full.  And the fishing is supposed to be great right there too.  A great spot for the forecasted thunderstorms that thankfully did not materialize.
On to Fort Myers, /Fort Myers Beach and then Sarasota later this week.  More soon.
